Large Stump and Roots Washed Ashore

This is a large tree stump, washed ashore in a violent storm the night before and resting upside down in the sandy beach at Seaside, Oregon Feb 2014. As you can see by the barnacles on the roots, it had been in the ocean for some time. Often river floods uproot large trees or stumps from along the banks in the Pacific Northwest, and many of these during high water flows make their way down the rivers to the ocean where they may drift at sea for some time before washing ashore as driftwood.
