Cedar Grove Monet Isaiah 61:3 Trees of Righteousness
One of my favorite quotes from the Bible - in a Monet Impressionist rendering of this photo of Cedar Shadows in a grove of western red cedar (Thuja plicata) along the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River not far from my home near North Bend, Washington. Abraham Lincoln said, "Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing." These trees are native to the Pacific Northwest and have been used for centuries by Native Tribes for canoes, shingles, decks, and outdoor construction. I learned in my high school forestry class that it is not a true cedar of the genus Cedrus, but rather a member of the cypress family, more closely related to an arborvitae. This tree is what we commonly think of in the Pacific NW when we think of cedar trees, but I guess Abraham Lincoln was right - that is only its reputation. It is really something else.
